Town asks state for tax deadline extension

Town of Oyster Bay officials have asked New York State to extend the deadline for the collection of school taxes, due in approximately 30 days. With the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic having a negative effect on residents throughout the state, most local governments have restricted or fully suspended in-person interactions at their facilities. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato have urged the state to extend the collection date from its originally-scheduled May 11th date to June 11th.

“As every level of government continues to do everything possible to assist the public as we confront this pandemic, the safety of our residents needs to remain our primary focus,” said Supervisor Saladino. “As we enter undergo the peak of this public health crisis, Tax Receiver Pravato and I have requested a deadline extension for payment of the second half of school taxes for a period of 30 days – until June 11th – without imposition of a penalty.”

The Receiver’s Office, although still open, has suspended in-person visits to both its Oyster Bay and Massapequa locations. Residents have been encouraged to make their payments on line, where Receiver Pravato arranged for taxpayers to remit payment via eCheck at a reduced fee. Residents can alternatively pay via credit card online, where a third-party vendor charges a processing fee, or mail their payments to the Receiver’s Office.

“We are currently coordinating the collection of the second half of school taxes for 2019-2020,” Receiver Pravato added. “Extending this deadline is critical in helping us continue our efforts to protect the safety of our residents.”
